A social worker could find himself in a variety of different environments, or choose from a variety of different specialties. They could work with the elderly, families or substance abusers amongst others, and their job is to ensure their well-being, medical care and health. They may also work in a research capacity, away from the daily interaction with different people. The job can be long and demanding and sometimes emotionally taxing, because they may also have to manage situations of abuse, neglect or illness.
A social worker must care for people and be compassionate, nurturing and patient. They usually have to make home visits, but could also work in community centers, rehabilitation centers or in an office setting. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics expects a generous growth, compared to other careers in criminal justice, of 16% in the field until 2018, which is largely due to the growing elderly population and an increased birth rate. They also state that the average expected salary is about $36,000-$50,000, but it largely depends on credentials, experience and the area you choose to specialize in.
Educational Requirements
To work in this industry, a criminal justice degree is of secondary importance but you need to at least get a bachelor's degree, and a major in social work is preferred, although you could also qualify by studying sociology or psychology. A masters degree is preferred though, since you will gain many more opportunities and can advance faster, and it gives you the chance to specialize. Both can be acquired online by looking into schools like Capella University or Ashford University, but you should look into one of the hundreds of schools accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. You will also need to be licensed, and although each state has slightly different requirements, in general it requires around 2 years of supervised, clinical visits before you can attain your licensure.
Job Duties
The role of a social worker is very diverse depending on the area of specialty, but in general they see to the medical and health care of their clients, as well as ensure proper food, clothing and counselling being provided. They may have to deal with clients who are facing domestic abuse, unemployment, substance abuse, child custody or divorce battles or neglect. They will typically assess the situation, file reports on the status and make recommendations, interview the client as well as their family, and try to provide the client with all the support and help they need.
In schools, they may act as a liaison between students, teachers and parents to help the students achieve success, and in medical facilities, like hospitals, they could provide counselling for people and families dealing with disease or loss. There are many diverse areas and responsibilities, but the bottom line is that a social worker is committed to his clients and does everything in his power to improve his living situation.
