How to Become a Customs Agent
There are different levels for a customs agent that are determined based on your education and previous experience, and that influence the salary you make. According to their government website, to be considered as a GS-5 agent, you need to hold a 4 year bachelor's degree, but a GS-7 level requires at least a year of graduate studies. These factors are important to consider since a GS-5 agent will make from $28,000-$37,000 while a GS-7 will make considerably more; in the $35,000-$47,000 range. Typically, a criminal justice degree or an international affairs degree are the most appropriate, both of which can be obtained online at schools like Capella University and Liberty University Online. There you will study classes like money laundering, the Constitution, child pornography, fraud, smuggling and narcotics. On top of the appropriate education, you need to be a US citizen over 21 years old and have to pass drug tests and a background check. Job Description
